Absinth is a strong liqueur (alcohol
up to 75% vol.) distilled with a great number of flavorful herbs like anis,
fennel, licorice, angelica root, star aniseed, and wormwood (Artemisia
absinthium). Thujon is a psychoactive substance present in wormwood.
Common Absinth may contain up
to 10mg/Kg Thujon - onyl Absinth labelled as "Bitterspirituose" are allowed to
contain up to 35 mg/Kg Thujon.
The absinth drink was referred
to in France as "La Fée Verte", or "The Green Fairy", which is a reference to
its often dazzling green color - first commercialized by Henri Louis Pernod
circa 1805.
